I remember playing Pong in Pizza Hut but my console gaming began with an Atari system in the early to mid '80's. Asteroids, Space Invaders. After a long hiatus I began playing PC versions of various strategy games: Panzers Phase 2, Blitzkrieg 2, Shiloe ... they were enjoyable, and kept me up too late at night.
Then came Call of Duty 2. Unbelievable. The graphics (I understand they are much better on a console), the play, the entire experience was addictive. I'm glad I have a short attention span and love the outdoors or I'd play games all the time.
Next I was introduced to AA, my first online game. The play with other "real" players was an exciting change. To a large extent the predictability of gaming goes out the window. After a few weeks of AA my wanderlust kicked in again and I was off to my first fantasy RPG.
Gothic !!: Night of the Raven exceeded my expectations. Shooters are fun, strategy games are interesting but I was hooked on Roll Playing Games and Gothic in particular. My first go 'round was as a Mercenary. My plan for a second trip to Korinis was to build dexterity and utilize primarily the bow. I became a Paladin and ended up as a master with a two handed sword.
Strength seem to always win out. It's more fun to hack your opponent than kill him from a distance with an arrow or spell. I will attempt to become a Fire Magician next however.
And now in a flurry of gaming excitement I have played SpellForce in anticipation for the sequel, Rise of Legends, City Life, all RTS games, and Uber Soldier a Night of the Living Dead meets the Third Reich FPS.
Am I still a Noob? I feel like one and not reading the manual helps with my incompetence level and steepens my learning curve. I'm comfortable with Noobism so I think I'll stay here a while.
Look for my reviews on all the above games forthcoming in the RoF Games area. I write from a players point, a beginning player that is. I'm interested in how easy a game is to pick up and play and if it holds my interest.
Your comments are welcome...I think. Just be kind. |
